Opportunities for Carlton project update, August 2011
Event to celebrate the partnership between Carlton Local Agency Network,
University of Melbourne and City of Melbourne
The event on Wednesday 17/8 was for the signing of an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)between CoM, University of Melbourne and the Carlton Local Agency Network (CLAN). The MoU will support three-way collaboration, better use of collective resources and closer community engagement. The MoU was signed by Lord Mayor Robert Doyle, Vice-Chancellor Professor Glyn Davis and Ms Mary Parfrey on behalf of CLAN. We've attached a few photos from the day, thank you to those who joined us for the event. One of the key actions identified in the Carlton Community Plan is the development of partnerships with major education institutions to respond to the needs of the Carltoncommunity. The MoU establishes a framework under which the parties initiate collaborative opportunities in the field of knowledge and information that will meet the parties’ mutually agreed purposes for the Carlton Community. The MoU will provide a lasting mechanism for shared work between the University, CoM and the community sector in Carlton, with each partner providing unique expertise and skills which can provide growth opportunities for Carlton’s diverse and vibrant population.

Work & Learning Childcare Forum, lead by the Church of All Nations
In June, the Work & Learning group hosted a Childcare Forum – to explore strengthening the demand and supply for childcare employment. One key outcome from the forum has been the development of a partnership between City of Melbourne, Brotherhood of St Laurence and theChurch of All Nations to focus on the employment pathways for women from the Carlton Housing estate who have either completed their childcare qualification or are undergoing study. These pathways may include work placement or traineeships, with a view to strengthening direct employment opportunities for this cohort.
It is hoped that this partnership can act as a model more broadly for both City of Melbourneand for other local employers around Carlton. The Brotherhood of St Laurence is also keen to build the childcare workforce in readiness for the childcare facility that will be opened at theAtherton Gardens hub. Congratulations to the Work & Learning group who worked hard to develop the forum, it looks like it will build momentum for new employment pathways for the communities on the Carlton estate.

Carlton Men's Shed
Following on from an initial establishment grant from DPCD, the Carlton Men’s Shed (CMS) is now ready for operation at the ground floor of 510 Lygon St, alongside the Estate Computers and community room - creating a hub of activity on the Carlton estate. OFC has provided a $10,000 grant to CHERS to support the initial coordination of policy, CMS timetabling and the training of local volunteers to manage the space. The CMS is now listed on the Australian Men’s Shed Association website and has been receiving enthusiastic contact from the broaderCarlton community with men keen to get involved. Department of Planning and Community Development (DPCD) Secretary's Visit to Carlton
In July, OFC hosted the DPCD Secretary and Deputy Secretary in a short tour of a number of DPCD funded initiatives underway through the OFC project. The visit also provided an opportunity to discuss the longer term transition for such three year funded projects - we look forward working with the results of the recent OFC survey, and with the OFC network and key partners in the project to look at the next steps to consider the next steps in Carlton. If you missed the chance to input to the survey, but have ideas you want to share, please get in touch,
