Low-income households will have access to no or low interest loans to buy a
more energy efficient refrigerator or washing machine to cut their power
bills, under a new federal government scheme.
The commonwealth's new $30 million Home Energy Saver Scheme will benefit
more than 50,000 Australian households from early 2012.
Families and Housing Minister Jenny Macklin said the government would bring
financial literacy services, access to no or low interest loans for more
efficient whitegoods and energy-saving advice.
Households could receive advice about practical and affordable devices to
cut their energy use through the use of more efficient lights and goods such
as shower heads and blinds.
Families would have their budgets assessed, which would look at their
spending, how they could use off-peak energy periods to cut power costs and
advice on balancing their books.
The scheme will be delivered through existing not-for-profit organisations
that provide financial counselling.
